Japanese media: 17 Japanese nationals sentenced to prison in China for espionage activities
Japanese media: 17 Japanese people have been sentenced since China implemented the counter-espionage law! Chinese public opinion said that Japan is the country with the most rampant espionage infiltration in China, and the crackdown on Japanese spies is urgent.
On the local time of the 25th, Kyodo News and other Japanese media reported that since China implemented the counter-espionage law in 2014 for 11 years, a total of 17 Japanese people have been sentenced or detained by Chinese authorities. There is also a claim that there are more who have been arrested but not yet sentenced, at least another 30 people.
Yesterday (the 24th), the Japanese Consulate General in Shanghai publicly disclosed that a Japanese middle-aged man in his 50s was sentenced to 12 years in prison for engaging in espionage activities. The sentence officially took effect yesterday. The man was detained at his residence in Shanghai in December 2021 and was formally charged by the Chinese court with endangering national security in August 2023.
After the news spread, many Chinese public opinions expressed that for many years, apart from the United States, Japan has been the most rampant in espionage infiltration and caused the greatest harm in espionage crimes.
According to information disclosed by sources, since the founding of New China, especially after the reform and opening-up, Japan's espionage infiltration activities against China, big and small, have exceeded an astonishing 10,000 times. Among them, those caught, sentenced, expelled, or warned have totaled more than 1,000 cases.
For example, in 2005, two Japanese spies were found trying to set up GPS receivers at Hotan Airport in Xinjiang. In 2007, Japanese spies collected coordinates in several cities in Jiangxi, involving military targets and other highly confidential geographical locations.
