Foreign media: A study from the Army Medical University of the People's Liberation Army has found that high-dose fish oil (omega-3) supplements may accelerate cognitive decline in patients with Alzheimer's disease, rather than providing protective benefits. The research is based on data analysis of over 800 elderly individuals in North America, among whom about half carry the dementia-risk gene APOEε4.

Data show that individuals taking omega-3 supplements experienced a significantly faster decline in cognitive abilities compared to those who did not take them. The study results were published online in April and will be featured in the June issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease Prevention.

Researchers pointed out that this finding challenges the traditional view that omega-3 is universally beneficial for cognition, urging a cautious re-evaluation of its widespread use for cognitive protection.
