The United States is forcing South Korea to participate in a future conflict in the Taiwan Strait!

The U.S. government has requested South Korea to agree to expand the Republic of Korea–United States Mutual Defense Treaty to apply to the U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy.

On the 18th, Christopher Landau, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, proposed at the South Korea–United States Deputy Foreign Ministers' meeting held in Tokyo: "Strengthen the ROK–U.S. alliance established by the ROK–U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty into a future-type comprehensive strategic alliance!"

The ROK–U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty stipulates that the two countries will work together for collective defense in the Pacific region. If one of the allies suffers a military attack in the Pacific region, other countries will recognize it as a threat to their own country and take action. This has traditionally been interpreted as meaning that if North Korea attacks South Korea, the United States will consider it an attack on its own country and intervene. Now, the U.S. government's request is that if a similar situation occurs between the U.S. and China in the Taiwan Strait, or if conflicts arise elsewhere in the Pacific region, South Korea should also participate in U.S. military intervention actions.

Satellite Park, Director of the National Security Office of South Korea, said that the requirement for the Yoon Suk-yeol government to contribute to the United States in the event of a U.S.-China conflict based on the ROK–U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty would be a challenge, as President Yoon Suk-yeol has clearly stated his position of not intervening in the Taiwan issue.
