According to reports by Reuters and RIA Novosti, on May 15th local time, Russian President Putin has signed a presidential decree, relieving Oleg Salyukov of his position as the Chief Commander of the Russian Federation Land Forces, and appointing him as the Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, replacing the previous secretary. The successor for his former position has not yet been announced.
At the age of 65, Salyukov has been in charge of the Russian Army since 2014. During his decade-long term, he has served multiple times as the overall commander for the Victory Day Parade on Red Square, including the grand parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War held on May 9th this year. As a senior general of the Russian military, his transfer will assist Secretary of the Security Council Shoigu in handling national security affairs.
The Federal Security Council is the highest advisory body in Russia, personally led by Putin. It is responsible for coordinating the formulation of national security policies but does not have direct jurisdiction over various security agencies and government departments.
