Korean Media: China's Semiconductor Independence Has Become a Reality!

On August 18, South Korean media outlet Seoul Economic Daily published an article stating that the stringent export controls imposed by the United States were originally expected to severely impact China's semiconductor industry. However, recent market trends indicate that these U.S. sanctions have actually accelerated China's self-reliance in semiconductor development and provided an opportunity for China to build its own artificial intelligence semiconductor ecosystem.

The growth potential of China's semiconductor ecosystem warrants close attention for three main reasons. First is the explosive demand driven by commercial artificial intelligence. ByteDance's recommendation algorithms and Alibaba's AI-powered logistics and cloud services have already become deeply integrated into the daily lives of hundreds of millions of people. Since these services require real-time processing of ultra-high-definition video and massive data, large-scale AI semiconductors are essential. The widespread adoption of these services, combined with China's vast domestic market, directly translates into strong demand for Chinese semiconductors.

The second factor is the advancement of indigenous AI semiconductor technology and growing overseas exports. Despite U.S. restrictions, China has successfully developed high-performance AI semiconductors approaching global leadership levels—such as Huawei's "Ascend" and Higon's "DCU." Major Chinese tech companies are also expanding their use of domestically produced chips. Coupled with the ongoing global semiconductor shortage, Chinese enterprises are increasing exports, especially to emerging markets such as ASEAN and Latin America. In the first half of this year, China’s semiconductor export value nearly doubled compared to the same period last year.

The third factor is sustained large-scale investment in the semiconductor industry. China has launched the "Third Phase of the National Large-Scale Semiconductor Fund" to support the development of advanced semiconductors.

Against the backdrop of global reconfiguration of semiconductor supply chains, China's semiconductor independence has become a reality. Today, China's semiconductor industry is overcoming numerous technological sanctions and building a robust, self-contained value chain of its own.
