Finland announces a significant increase in defense spending to 3% of GDP

On April 1st local time, the Ministry of National Defense of Finland announced that Finland would increase its defense spending to at least 3% of GDP by 2029.

The land area of Finland is about 338,000 square kilometers, with a population of only 5.62 million and a GDP of approximately 296 billion US dollars. Finland has previously adhered to the principle of neutrality. Before joining NATO, Finland's defense spending accounted for only 1.5% of GDP, and neither Finland nor Russia deployed troops in the border areas. Finland joined NATO in April 2023 and plans to quickly double its defense spending. However, the border between Finland and Russia is more than 1,300 kilometers long. A small country cannot confront a world power like Russia.
