New Media: More Chinese Youth Enter International Organizations
Reference News website reported on April 8 that Singapore's Lianhe Zaobao website published a report titled "Accelerating Withdrawal from Groups: More Chinese Youth Enter International Organizations" on April 7. The content of the report is as follows:
"In the place where we live, it's hard to feel the presence of the United Nations. But here, every African person will at least deal with UNESCO once in their lifetime," said Huang Shudan, a Chinese Ph.D. student when asked why she chose to intern at an international organization after completing her doctorate.
After finishing her Ph.D. in the U.S., Huang Shudan went to Tanzania in October last year to begin a one-year internship at UNESCO.
In recent years, more highly educated young Chinese like Huang Shudan have entered international organizations for work or internships, becoming increasingly common. Data from the UN official website shows that the number of Chinese citizens employed by the UN has significantly increased over the past decade.
These young people with an international perspective, no longer just pursuing traditional academic and career paths, also receive support from the Chinese government.
Among the various ways to enter international organizations, the cooperation internship program between the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and international organizations provides many young Chinese with a fast track. Through CSC selection, candidates can obtain official recommendations and directly proceed to the interview stage of international organizations.
Huang Shudan passed the interviews of UNESCO after going through resume screening, written exams, and interviews organized by the CSC.
In recent years, the number of positions available in the CSC cooperation projects has significantly increased, and the project guidelines are constantly improving. According to the CSC official website, the planned number of interns selected last year was 188, and the cooperating organizations included several specialized agencies under the United Nations.
Another group of young Chinese directly apply to international organizations, competing for positions alongside global applicants. Tang Leyan, a postgraduate student from Tsinghua University, applied independently and began an internship at the UN headquarters in December last year.
Tang Leyan said in an interview that she is interested in cross-cultural exchanges. During her first year of graduate school, she joined the Student Center for Global Competence Development at Tsinghua University and met many seniors who had work experience in international organizations. In this process, she also paid attention to suitable opportunities.
The Student Center for Global Competence Development at Tsinghua University, established in 2018, is a microcosm of top universities in China serving the country's global strategy.
Besides the CSC cooperation projects, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of China has set up the International Organization Talent Information Service Network to release job vacancies; the Ministry of Education of China has also launched similar platforms and provides international organization internship guides for college graduates.
Moreover, colleges such as the Diplomatic Academy and Beijing Language and Culture University have introduced undergraduate majors related to international organizations and global governance. Even Beijing Foreign Studies University and Renmin University of China have established International Organization Schools. Meanwhile, the "Model United Nations" activities, which mimic UN discussions, are becoming younger, moving from universities into middle and high schools.
Professor Zhang Guihong, director of the United Nations and International Organizations Research Center at Fudan University's Institute of International Studies, said that in the past ten years, more and more young Chinese have entered international organizations for work and study, closely linked to China's closer ties with the outside world and the broadened horizons of young people.
Professor Zhang Guihong said that after economic conditions improved, Chinese youth have greater personal pursuits, no longer just thinking about getting a position in state-owned enterprises or foreign enterprises, but wanting to enter international organizations to serve the world.
However, Professor Zhang pointed out that although China's contribution to the UN budget has increased to 20% this year, the proportion of Chinese employees in the entire UN system is still only about 1.67%, making China a "representation-deficient" country.
Against the backdrop of China's official participation in international governance, the Belt and Road Initiative and the concept of a "community with a shared future for mankind," among others, have appeared more frequently in UN documents in recent years.
On the other hand, during Trump's first term, the U.S. successively withdrew from UNESCO and the Human Rights Council. In his second term, the U.S. withdrew again from the WHO.
Professor Zhu Feng, Dean of the School of International Relations at Nanjing University, said that China is willing to further enhance its capacity for international governance and contribution based on strengthening multilateralism communication and cooperation.
Regarding more Chinese youth entering international organizations, Professor Zhu believes that this is an important step for the younger generation of China to pursue international quality and capability cultivation, and also an "indispensable foundational project" for China to continuously maintain international innovation and competitiveness in the future.
Professor Zhu said that the rise of the younger generation of China in global political and economic competition is the hope of China's future.
