Russian media attention: The AI created by China can recreate a face through DNA!
Just a strand of hair or even saliva can recreate a person's appearance.
On May 16, the article was published in the Komsomolskaya Pravda.
The artificial intelligence "Difface" developed by scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences can reconstruct a 3D facial model based solely on DNA fragments.
This study published in the journal Advanced Science is a real breakthrough, indicating that genetic information can be directly related to specific physical characteristics.
Russian media cited Chinese media data:
The Difface model studied 9,500 Han Chinese volunteers. Each participant provided a complete genome sequence and a high-resolution 3D facial scan.
The algorithm analyzed small variations in DNA associated with physical traits such as nose shape, cheekbones, and jawline.
The artificial intelligence has learned to "compress" these genes and visual data into a shared space and then use diffusion models to reconstruct digital facial images.
Amazingly, with technological development, these data can even be obtained from a single strand of hair or a drop of saliva. When different age parameters are input, the system can accurately "morph" faces — read the suspect's appearance at age 20 or 40 with one click.
Russian experts believe this research has many application scopes:
Forensics. Even without witnesses or video footage, it may be possible to create a suspect's facial portrait based on discovered DNA.
Medicine. Potential for diagnosing genetic diseases and predicting age-related changes.
Genetics and biometrics. Creating new methods for identifying and analyzing genetic features.
Russian media pointed out: This technology also raises privacy issues. If someone can reconstruct from so-called "anonymous" DNA, it may undermine the concept of personal genetic security.
If this pattern falls into the hands of commercial entities or government agencies, it may be used for surveillance systems and even discrimination.
Russian media also noted: Currently, Difface only works with Han Chinese because the experiment did not include other ethnic groups.
Natalia Dareeva, a Russian netizen, said:
Although it seems strange internally in China... if nearly 100 countries also use them, it will be very interesting.
