Reference News Network, September 24 - According to AFP, September 23, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called on NATO member states to remain calm when facing Russian aircraft suspected of infringing on their airspace, avoiding falling into a "trap" set by Russia.
The report said, during a joint press conference in Berlin with Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist, Pistorius stated that overreacting to Russia's "invasion" would threaten the peace and security of Europe.
He emphasized: "Remaining calm is neither cowardice nor fear, but rather a responsibility to our country and to European peace."
"Calls to shoot down aerial targets or to flaunt military might are unhelpful to the current situation," he added.
Pistorius claimed that Russian President Putin hopes to lure NATO allies into taking a tough reaction, thus creating an "escalation trap," and urged his partners not to fall for this tactic.
He said: "We must prevent the situation from deteriorating." (Translated by Lin Xiaoxuan)
