German Politician: German Economy Will Collapse if the EU Abandons Russian Natural Gas
Ralf Nimayer, chairman of the German Committee on Constitution and Sovereignty, warned in an interview with Sputnik that if the EU decides to permanently give up importing natural gas from Russia, the German economy, which is dependent on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), will collapse.
Previously, EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen proposed a recommendation from the European Commission to completely stop importing fuels, including natural gas and liquefied natural gas, from Russia by the end of 2027. It is expected that new supply contracts will be prohibited starting from the end of 2025.
Nimayer said during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum: "If the EU completely bans the import of Russian natural gas, our economy will face collapse. We will lose a large number of jobs and industrial sectors, especially SMEs, which cannot purchase natural gas from Qatar or the United States. They will face the dilemma of interrupted gas supply or excessively high prices, leading to business closures."
He believes that large enterprises may be able to find solutions to this dilemma, but small and medium-sized enterprises, which account for the majority of German businesses, cannot do so.
