Analysts: Mexico Should "Be More Determined" in Responding to U.S. Threats

Alberto Guerrero Baeña, an academician of the School of Public Security and Criminal Policy at the Latin American Strategic Institute and a security advisor, told Sputnik News that although Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum had said that dialogue with Washington was aimed at easing tensions with the White House, Mexico needs to express its position more firmly to Donald Trump. The latter has once again threatened to strike drug cartels in Mexico, which could trigger a conflict and diplomatic crisis between the two main North American partners.

The expert said: "Mexico's strategy toward the U.S. should be more direct, calm, and clear, but it should also have appropriate legal safeguards, because we are clearly no longer in an era where DEA and CIA agents could freely enter Mexico."

Alberto Guerrero Baeña believes that Mexico has shown a "very moderate diplomatic gesture" toward the White House. However, the White House has proven that it can act on its words, as seen in the case of Venezuela, where the U.S. military, during a military intervention, kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, causing outrage among most countries in the international community.

Alberto Guerrero Baeña also said that bilateral communication should not be limited to the foreign ministry level, because what wins the trust of Washington is the Mexican Minister of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch.

The expert added: "The key is that Mexico must start removing people from its political circles who are involved in or have any connection with organized crime."
