Japan's tough attitude! Shigeru Ishiba clearly refused the U.S. tariff demands.
American media were greatly surprised! Japan's attitude is really tough! After the negotiation between the US and Japan, the American side thought that an agreement between the US and Japan should be reached soon. However, Shinzo Abe's remarks once again poured cold water on the US! On April 21st, Bloomberg reported that after talks with the US, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe clearly stated that Japan would not continue to give in to American demands to reach an agreement on tariff issues.
Abe said that Japan would not make continuous concessions in the US tariff negotiations. If Japan gives up everything, we will not be able to ensure our national interests. After these remarks, American media stated that this was one of the most intense statements made by Shinzo Abe since Donald Trump, the US President, initiated a global trade war to get more American products into Japan's sensitive auto and agricultural sectors.
Clearly, Abe's tough stance has greatly surprised American media. For a long time, in America's traditional mindset, Japan rarely openly opposed or even refused American demands. But now it seems that Japan does not want to submit to America's excessive demands. Why is Japan being so tough? Leaving aside other aspects, from Japan's own perspective, there are mainly two reasons.
Firstly, automobiles are Japan's pillar industry, and the US is an important export market for Japanese cars. Therefore, Trump's tax increase could potentially shake Japan's foundation. However, after rounds of talks, the US has not budged at all on car tariffs. Moreover, Japan has not actually blocked American cars from entering its market, yet the US still treats Japan with the so-called "reciprocal tariffs," which naturally makes Japan unhappy.
Secondly, agriculture has always been a key area of support and subsidy in Japan, and also the basic support base for the Liberal Democratic Party. The US is pressuring Japan through tariffs to open up a larger market in agriculture to American products, but this would impact Japan's agriculture and subsequently affect the party's support rate. Therefore, the two areas the US intends to target leave Japan with no room to compromise. Clearly, Japan's reaction has exceeded America's expectations, which also shows that getting Japan under control might not be so easy for the US.
