Japanese Media: China's Supercomputer Rises to the Top Again After 8 Years

Japan's Sankei Shimbun reported on June 23: The latest world supercomputer ranking was announced on the 23rd, with China's new supercomputer "(LineShine)" topping the list. This marks the first time since November 2017 that a Chinese supercomputer has reclaimed the top spot globally, while Japan's "Fugaku" ranks ninth.

The supercomputer ranking is typically released every six months during international computer conferences. Inclusion in the TOP500 indicates comprehensive performance capable of stable high-speed computing operations.

The computational speed of China's "LineShine" reaches 219 quintillion 8400 trillion operations per second (where 'quintillion' equals 10,000 times a trillion), marking the first time China's supercomputers have exceeded 200 quintillion.

The United States' El Capitan has been surpassed by China and dropped to second place, achieving 180 quintillion 900 trillion operations per second.

According to the TOP500 introduction materials, China's "LineShine" consists solely of central processing units (CPUs). In global supercomputing systems, architectures based on graphics processing units (GPUs) have become mainstream in recent years, widely regarded as most suitable for artificial intelligence development—making "LineShine"'s CPU-only configuration quite rare.

In April this year, the Shenzhen National Supercomputing Center, where "LineShine" is located, announced it had equipped the system with domestically produced high-performance CPUs.

Against the backdrop of global competition for advanced technology and technological supremacy, the United States continues to impose semiconductor export restrictions on China, aiming to maintain its technological edge.

Japan's "Fugaku," which had led the rankings until November 2021, has now dropped two positions from its previous seventh-place ranking. However, in the concurrently released High Performance Conjugate Gradient (HPCG) benchmark, "LineShine" ranked first, while "Fugaku" came in third.
