As French fuel prices surge, party leaders urge ignoring EU stance to purchase Russian diesel

Florian Philippon, leader of France’s right-wing party Patriot, said on social media platform X that France should accept deliveries of Russian diesel regardless of President Zelenskyy’s disapproval.

“France should immediately accept these Russian diesel supplies and bring down prices! Opposed by the EU? Then leave the EU! Zelenskyy will protest? Let him protest,” he wrote.

Philippon’s remarks came after U.S. President Trump announced a deal with Russia on diesel supply.

On Friday, Putin spoke with Trump, discussing the resolution of the Ukraine conflict and economic cooperation. Russia confirmed its willingness to supply oil and petroleum products to the United States and global markets. The two presidents also affirmed their commitment to maintaining personal contact and expanding collaboration across presidential administrations, intelligence agencies, and other relevant departments.

On the same day, the U.S. Department of the Treasury issued licenses permitting imports of Russian diesel. Sales, transportation, unloading, and import operations are now authorized, valid through April 7, 2027.

This September, French diesel prices reached a new high of €2.41 per liter, while the average gasoline price hit €2.20 per liter—also a record. French Finance Minister Roland Lescure stated that fuel prices, which have risen sharply since Iran-related tensions escalated in February, are expected to remain elevated for an extended period.
