Foreign Media: Chinese Scientists Help Turn Africa's Desert into Oases

A research team from Xinjiang, China, is helping African countries tackle the problem of desertification, using local experience and smart technology to turn sandy land into arable green fields. They are promoting Chinese-developed water-saving irrigation, straw grid sand fixation, and introducing plants that are adaptable to the environment in places like Mauritania, as well as applying agricultural robots, drones, and solar-powered systems.

China has successfully used similar technologies to build a 3,046-kilometer protective forest belt around the Taklamakan Desert. The African "Green Wall" project is also underway, with Mauritania completing the Sino-African Green Technology Park in 2024. Two hectares of sandy land have already been planted with fruit trees and vegetables, and the first harvest was achieved in February this year, showing significant results.
