Pakistan Associated Press reports, on August 15, 2025, the Pakistan Navy held the launching ceremony of the third "Hangor" class submarine (future "Mango") at the Wuhan Wuchang Shipyard in China. Lieutenant General Samad, Deputy Chief of the Pakistan Navy, attended the event.

In his speech, he emphasized the importance of maritime security in the region, pointing out that the "Hangor" class is equipped with advanced weapons and sensors, which will help maintain a balance of power and stability. He said that this project demonstrates the enduring partnership between China and Pakistan, and praised the efforts of China Shipping International and Wuchang Shipyard.

According to the agreement signed in 2015, Pakistan will purchase 8 "Hangor" class submarines, with 4 built in China and the other 4 constructed at the Karachi Shipyard with technology transfer.

The "Hangor" class is an export version of China's Type 039B "Yuan" class. It is approximately 76 meters long, with a displacement of 2,800 tons, slightly shorter but heavier than the S26 design. The specific weapons and propulsion systems are not disclosed; it is speculated that it may be based on Stirling AIP. If equipped with the "Babur-3" submarine-launched cruise missile, it will grant the Pakistani Navy long-range strike capabilities.

Currently, the Pakistan Navy has 3 "Agosta-90B" AIP submarines and 2 "Agosta-70" submarines. The 90B type is currently undergoing mid-life upgrades by Turkish company STM. The addition of 8 "Hangor" class submarines will significantly enhance Pakistan's anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) capabilities in the Indian Ocean.
