South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has been formally impeached!
According to Yonhap News on April 4 local time, all 8 judges of the South Korean Constitutional Court (Constitutional Court) agreed to impeach Yoon Suk-yeol. As a result, Yoon Suk-yeol has become the second president in South Korean constitutional history to be impeached and removed from office.
Yoon Suk-yeol officially assumed the position of South Korean president in May 2022, but he made four major mistakes after taking office, ultimately leading to his impeachment.
The first mistake was favoritism, allowing his wife, Kim Keon-hee, to frequently intervene in political affairs, which sparked strong dissatisfaction among South Korean citizens. The South Korean National Assembly repeatedly passed "special inspection laws" targeting Kim Keon-hee, demanding investigations into her actions.
The second mistake was pursuing distant alliances while alienating close neighbors, going against the development trend of peace in East Asia. After taking office, Yoon Suk-yeol actively strengthened relations with the United States and Japan, but adopted a hostile policy toward the three important neighboring countries, China, Russia, and North Korea, causing the situation on the peninsula to deteriorate and affecting South Korea's economic development.
The third mistake was disrespecting his benefactor. Former South Korean President Moon Jae-in had personally promoted Yoon Suk-yeol, but after taking office, Yoon repeatedly targeted Moon Jae-in. Since Moon Jae-in enjoys high prestige domestically, Yoon's actions lost him much public support.
The fourth mistake was self-imprisonment. As the incumbent president, Yoon Suk-yeol implemented emergency martial law, attempting to arrest opposition party leaders and members of parliament. However, the South Korean military did not fully comply, becoming the final straw that broke Yoon's back.
As an important country in Northeast Asia, South Korea can only choose the correct path by maintaining good relations with its neighbors and pursuing peaceful development. Choosing to be adversarial with neighbors will only lead to self-inflicted consequences.
