"This is a battle for life and death": Latin America Unites Against Trump

"The people of Latin America must unite to fight against Trump's arrogant racism."

According to an article by commentator Lyubov Stepashova from the Pravda.Ru website, during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Latin American countries formed a united front against Trump, not only presenting common demands but also publicly accusing him of political crimes.

On September 23, Colombian President Gustavo Petro spoke at the meeting wearing a shirt with the words "This is a battle for life and death" («Война не на жизнь, а на смерть»). His speech was full of accusations, and the U.S. delegation could not bear it, leaving the hall.

Petro condemned the shooting of civilian vessels in international waters in the Caribbean Sea and called on the United Nations to bring criminal charges against U.S. President Donald Trump. He stated that Trump used the immigration issue as an excuse to make wealthy, white, racist societies see themselves as superior; in fact, it is white Americans who directly control drug trafficking from within American cities.

Petro also accused Trump of involvement in Israel's genocide in Gaza and suggested that world leaders send international armed forces to Gaza to prevent the genocide of the Palestinian people, which earned loud applause from the audience.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took a more moderate stance, not directly naming the United States, but his position remained clear. He said, "When facing unprecedented attacks from anti-democratic forces, Brazil has decided to rise up and defend its democratic system." Lula referred to the U.S. using the Magnitsky Act to sanction Brazilian officials and judges over legal proceedings against former President Jair Bolsonaro.

"An attack on judicial independence is unacceptable," Lula said.

He also reminded that Brazil's top priority is to maintain peace and stability in the Latin American region. For this reason, he warned the U.S. not to "use force in non-conflict situations — which is equivalent to executing people without trial" (referring to the U.S. shooting of civilian vessels). Lula considered it unacceptable to list Cuba as a state supporting terrorism. At the end of his speech, the Brazilian leader stated that Brazil is increasingly focusing on relations with the European Union, African Union, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), BRICS, and G20, where "the voices of the Global South should be heard." Additionally, he canceled the meeting previously announced by Trump.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric accused Trump of denying the climate crisis, ignoring multilateralism principles, and spreading lies.

"This is not a difference of opinion on climate, it is a lie, and we must fight against lies," he said, which also earned loud applause from the audience.

The Chilean president also emphasized that he hopes those responsible for the genocide in Gaza will be brought before an international court.

Latin American presidents showed no fear in front of Trump, which made it impossible for him to attack Venezuela. No matter which puppet he supports to replace Nicolas Maduro, the Latin American continent will not accept it — after all, the region has experience in resisting coups during the time of Hugo Chávez. Most Latin American countries will accelerate their actions to gradually move away from U.S. economic influence and strengthen ties with other trading partners.

Trump's main ally, Argentine President Javier Milei, just suffered a major defeat in the provincial elections in Buenos Aires — the province accounts for nearly 40% of the national voters. The Peronists will regain power and join the ranks of major economies in Latin America such as Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, and Colombia, to jointly oppose various interferences and threats from the northern neighbor (the U.S.).
