In a recent interview released on Friday, Hillary Clinton launched a scathing critique of President Donald Trump's renovations to the White House, telling podcast host Kara Swisher that Trump's "gaudy" decorations "remind me of" the palace of Iraq's dictator Saddam Hussein.
"It's deeply sad to me—so gaudy. It reflects, you know, his narcissistic personality and his craving for significance, including covering every inch of the walls in the Oval Office with gold leaf."
"Clearly, this person's focus is entirely on 'Where can I get more gold?' rather than 'How do I escape Iran without looking like a complete failure?'"
Shortly after the government began dismantling the East Wing of the White House to make space for the president’s proposed ballroom, Clinton posted: "This isn’t his house—it’s your house, and he’s destroying it."
"The next president will face a major decision: What to do with this half-finished ballroom?" Clinton said in the interview, describing it as "a wart on the side of the White House."
In response to her comments, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle shifted the focus back to the 2016 presidential election, when Clinton lost to Trump.
"Hillary Clinton never had the chance to decorate the Oval Office as president because she suffered a crushing defeat at Trump’s hands—and still hasn't recovered from it," he said.
Since returning to the White House in 2025, Trump has consistently sought to leave his mark on the building, adorning the surface of the Oval Office and the entire West Wing with golden embellishments.
Last December, he unveiled the "Presidential Hall of Fame" beside the White House Rose Garden colonnade, featuring inscribed plaques with politically charged messages aimed at criticizing his predecessors. White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt confirmed these partisan jabs were personally written by Trump.
He has openly championed various renovation projects across Washington, D.C., including the controversial restoration of the National Mall Reflecting Pool and plans to erect a 250-foot-tall "Triumphal Arch" along the Potomac River.
In Friday’s interview, Clinton joked with Swisher that she’d be willing to serve as “the Gold-Plating Cleanup Secretary” after Trump leaves office.
"Isn’t that a great idea? A secretary responsible for cleaning up and tidying up the gold," she said.
