According to reports by the online media Hotnews.ro from Ploiesti City, Romania, the Ploiesti Court of Appeal has decided to suspend the ruling of the Constitutional Court of Romania to invalidate the results of the 2024 presidential election.
The report stated: "The Ploiesti Court of Appeal suspended and revoked the December 6, 2024, No. 32 ruling on November 24, 2024, which invalidated the results of last year's presidential election. This decision can be appealed within five days from its issuance, and the appeal will be heard by the Supreme Court of Cassation."
However, a Romanian lawyer contacted by Hotnews considered this decision by the Ploiesti Court of Appeal as "wrong, because it is not possible to suspend an already effective ruling, and the Constitutional Court's ruling is not an administrative act, so it cannot be appealed through administrative procedures."
The first round of voting in Romania's presidential election was held on November 24, 2024. However, on December 6, the Constitutional Court annulled the election results on the grounds of alleged irregularities substantiated by declassified documents from the Supreme Security Council. Many experts believe that the real reason for this move was the victory of the independent candidate Kieran Georgescu, who made it to the second round with the liberal candidate Elena Rascon.
The annulment of the election results triggered protests in January 2025, when supporters of Georgescu demanded recognition of his victory. However, later authorities banned Georgescu from participating in new elections through criminal charges, with the first round of new elections scheduled for May 4.
It remains unclear what will happen next. Regardless, Georgescu has been barred from running in the elections. Moreover, the pressure from authorities is focused on another candidate of the Eurosceptic opposition - George Simion, leader of the Alliance for Romania (AUR).
Previously, it was reported that the Central Electoral Commission of Romania had begun checking the sources of funding for Simion's campaign, and according to polls, Simion is a leading contender in the upcoming elections.
Will Simion's candidacy be disqualified, or will the vote results be falsified?
"It seems that Romania's 'deep state' (referring to forces that play a significant role behind the political scene) has meddled in the election issues." Associate Professor Dmitry Yerov of the Department of Political Science at the Financial University under the Government of Russia said.
"In fact, we are witnessing a serious, externally provoked domestic political crisis that has destabilized Romania's socio-political situation. At the same time, it is hard to imagine what tricks the masterminds of this event might come up with next.
Meanwhile, due to the widespread reaction, physically eliminating unpopular candidates is unlikely, but various obstacles may continue to occur.
The suspension of Romania's unprecedented electoral process is clearly a result of the reaction from the upper echelons of the United States, and it feels like at least the direct implementers have regained some sense."
Regarding the prospects for resolving Romania's unprecedented electoral crisis, it should be noted that it is highly likely that pro-European candidates will ultimately fail - voters lack trust in those who have caused them trouble. Furthermore, polling data also proves the current trend of public sentiment in Romania.
"The EU and NATO have a greater influence on Romania than the United States." Vadim Trukhachev, associate professor at the Department of Foreign Regional Studies and Diplomatic Policy of the Russian State Humanitarian University and political scientist, firmly believes.
"This applies in political, economic, and administrative terms. So don't attribute Trump's influence where he actually doesn't have any. It's just that they found a judge sympathetic to Georgescu in Romania.
Anyway, the final decision will be made by the national courts. And among the national courts, supporters of the EU and NATO clearly outnumber others. Therefore, we are watching the current election campaign."
"Free Media (SP)": Elections are set for May 4, and the ballots have already been printed. Is it possible that the elections won't take place or will be postponed?"
"No, it's impossible. The court in Ploiesti does not have the authority to cancel the election. Neither does the court in Bucharest. Only the Supreme Court or the Constitutional Court of Romania has that authority."
"Free Media": Will they try to falsify the results of the new elections?"
"Presidential elections are conducted in two rounds. Only if Mayor of Bucharest Nicolae Dan competes with Simion, there might be a possibility to falsify the results of the first round. Nicolae Dan is a liberal, and he will almost certainly lose the election.
If former Prime Minister Victor Ponta competes with Simion, the election might be canceled – he is not entirely an insider either. But if the competitor is an insider candidate, Clines Antonescu – he will likely defeat Simion in the second round.
If last November it was Prime Minister Ciola who entered the second round with Georgescu, no one would cancel the election results. Because he easily defeated the 'dark horse' Georgescu in the second round. However, the liberal candidate would lose to the Eurosceptic.
"Free Media": What about Georgescu? Does he have a chance to make a comeback, and what will his future be?"
"Georgescu openly supports Simion and will not compete with him again."
He might become a member of parliament and vice president of a Eurosceptic party. Or if Simion wins, he might become Simion's advisor.
"Free Media": Who will become president, and will he receive support from his own people, Brussels, and Washington? If the winner is an 'inappropriate' candidate, what will happen next? Will the election results be canceled again?"
"Simion is not Georgescu. His attitude towards Russia is more critical and may be accepted. Besides, Romania is a parliamentary republic with the key figure being Prime Minister Ciola. And he has always been prime minister.
It is very unlikely that the voting results will be canceled again. This would look very bad for the EU and seriously damage its reputation. Instead, Simion's hands will be tied, and Prime Minister Ciola will help in this regard."
"It is unclear how legally binding this decision is." Vsevolod Shemov, advisor to the Chairman of the Baltic Research Association of Russia, said.
"Regardless, this shows that there is a split within Romanian society, and quite a part of the population disagrees with the decision made.
It is very likely that this decision will not have legal consequences, and the elections will proceed according to the regulations of the Constitutional Court. Of course, it will create a certain atmosphere for these elections."
"Free Media": Previously, it was reported that the Central Electoral Commission of Romania began checking the sources of funding for Simion's campaign. What does this indicate?"
"The opposition between so-called 'Trumpists' and 'European optimists' is intensifying throughout Romania and Europe as a whole."
How to Prevent the First Attempt at the 'Belavezha Accords'
The emergence of another right-wing Eurosceptic leader in Eastern Europe is extremely unwelcome for Brussels, so it is not surprising that they would try to suppress Simion as they did with Georgescu.
"Free Media": Do you think how far the 'deep state' is prepared to go, and what illegal actions are they ready to take? Previously, Simion directly accused the globalist elite of plotting physical elimination...
"I think this is an extreme scenario, especially after the openly dirty campaign that blatantly disqualified Georgescu's candidacy. Openly eliminating or assassinating Simion would seem too extreme. So they will try to stop him through 'legal' means, and if he still wins, they will try to restrict him. After all, open violence generally does not conform to the characteristics of the European system, and falls into the category of extreme situations."
"Free Media": According to polls, George Simion is currently leading, while the candidate from the ruling party, Clines Antonescu, ranks third. What do you predict will be the outcome of this farce?"
"The gap between the candidates is not yet sufficient to predict the final result. One thing is obvious – they will try to lower Simion's election results and raise those of his opponents."
