South Korean media: China's "patent rise", application numbers account for half of the global total, three times that of the United States!
On December 9, the South Korean media "Seoul Economic Daily" published an article stating that China submitted 1.8 million patent applications last year, accounting for half of the global total (3.7 million), three times that of the United States.
Data released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) shows that China submitted 1.8 million patent applications last year, an increase of 153,000 from the previous year. The United States ranked second with 603,000 applications.
The share of China in global patent applications also increased from 34.6% in 2014 to 49.1% last year. Last year, the number of authorized patent applications in China was 1.045 million, more than three times that of the United States (320,000). China's patent applications increased by 124,000, while the United States only increased by 4,570, a difference of more than 27 times.
In 2024, 93.1% of the patent applications accepted by the China National Intellectual Property Administration were from Chinese residents, while over half of the applicants accepted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) during this period were non-American residents.
At the same time, a total of 3.7 million patent applications were submitted globally last year, of which 2.1 million were registered. According to the application fields, computer-related applications accounted for the highest percentage at 13.2%, followed by electrical machinery, instruments, digital communication, and medical technology.
In particular, China has listed artificial intelligence (AI) as a national strategic industry and has fully invested in related patent applications. Shen Changyu, director of the State Intellectual Property Administration, said, "China currently holds 60% of the global AI patents. We will accelerate the formulation of intellectual property protection rules in emerging areas such as AI and big data, guide the establishment of AI patent pools, and promote the improvement of international rules and standards."
