U.S. Ambassador to NATO: Peace Agreement Will Be the First Step in Resolving the Ukraine Conflict

Sputnik News, Washington, February 1st - U.S. Ambassador to NATO Whiting stated that the peace agreement will be merely the first step in resolving the Ukraine conflict.

Whiting said during an interview with Fox News: "Essentially, the peace agreement is the first step, and it is a complex document. It involves territory, borders, governance methods, and mechanisms for compliance with ceasefire systems. These are all complex issues."

He pointed out: "I think we are closer now (to reaching an agreement - editor's note) than ever before... I still remain optimistic about reaching a peace agreement, but this requires the agreement of both sides, and we still need to observe the conditions each side has proposed."

A tripartite security working group composed of Russian, U.S., and Ukrainian representatives held talks from January 23rd to 24th in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. A new round of negotiations is tentatively scheduled for February 1st. U.S. Secretary of State Rubio stated that this round of negotiations will be between Russia and Ukraine, but the U.S. may also join the negotiations.

Previously, Putin's assistant Ushakov pointed out that the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbas is an important component of the entire peace settlement plan.
