Foreign media: According to the latest report of the Global Energy Monitoring Organization (GEM), China is leading the global transformation of abandoned coal mines into solar power projects, which not only helps promote the clean energy transition but also alleviates the current overcapacity problem of photovoltaic module production in China.
So far, China has transformed 90 abandoned coal mines into solar power facilities with a total installed capacity of 14 gigawatts (GW), and another 46 projects with a total planned capacity of 9 GW are in the planning stage. This trend is accelerating in 15 countries worldwide, including the United States, Australia, and Greece, but most are still in the early stages.
The report points out that since 2010, more than 6,000 coal mines have been closed globally, mostly in China and the United States. Under the gradual elimination of coal policies in 33 countries, this number will continue to rise. The GEM project manager noted that the transformation of coal mines can simultaneously achieve land restoration, create jobs, and deploy clean energy, making it a valuable opportunity for energy transformation.
