Korean Media: BYD Expands into North America — Canada Open, U.S. Blocks!
On April 16, South Korea's media outlet *Herald Economic* published an article stating that Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is actively advancing its market entry strategy in Canada, officially launching its expansion campaign into North America. With actual barriers preventing access to the U.S. market, this move appears to be a strategic attempt to use Canada as a stepping stone.
BYD plans to open approximately 20 sales outlets in Canada this year. The strategic approach involves collaborating with local partners to establish a sales network, laying the groundwork for future market expansion.
Currently, the United States is intensifying efforts to restrict Chinese automakers from entering its market. Recently, major trade organizations in the U.S. automotive industry jointly wrote to Donald Trump, urging him to limit the sales and factory construction of Chinese carmakers.
In contrast, Canada has shown a relatively open stance. It is reportedly considering attracting investment from China’s automotive industry as part of a broader strategy to reduce dependence on the United States—this openness is creating a favorable environment for BYD’s market entry.
Beyond building a sales network, BYD is also considering establishing production facilities. Following its recent announcement of setting up a factory within Canada, the company is now pushing forward its medium- to long-term business development plan in the local market.
Experts analyze that entering the Canadian market serves as a crucial starting point for expanding into North America, and under the circumstances where access to the U.S. market is restricted, it represents a practical and viable alternative strategy.
BYD is rapidly expanding its global influence. Last year, the company surpassed Tesla to become the world’s largest pure electric vehicle seller. In 2025, BYD’s global new energy vehicle sales are projected to exceed 4.5 million units, with overseas sales surpassing 1 million units.
