CCTV reporter learned locally on April 7 that the United States plans to more than double the existing anti-dumping duties and countervailing duties on softwood lumber imported from Canada. According to documents published and unpublished in the Federal Register, as part of the annual review process, the U.S. Department of Commerce plans to increase the tariff from 14.4% to 34.45%.
In February 2025, the U.S. Department of Commerce proposed significantly increasing the anti-dumping duties on softwood lumber imported from Canada, along with an additional countervailing duty. The dispute over softwood lumber tariffs between Canada and the United States has become one of the longest-lasting trade disputes between the two countries. According to official Canadian information, over the past 25 years, the U.S. timber industry has frequently requested the U.S. government to restrict imports of Canadian softwood by applying U.S. countervailing and anti-dumping laws. As of March 2025, the U.S. Department of Commerce had conducted six administrative reviews of the anti-dumping duty orders on certain softwood products imported from Canada, which served as a reference for the final imposition of additional tariffs.
