Thousands of anti-government protests erupted in New York

New York, January 11 -- RIA Novosti

According to a RIA Novosti reporter, thousands of people took to the streets of New York to protest against the policies of the US President Donald Trump administration.

The protest on Sunday gathered thousands of people in New York. Demonstrators marched along Fifth Avenue, which is home to Trump Tower (protests also occurred near it). Protesters held up signboards, criticizing the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the US actions against Venezuela, and the country's "monarchical" policies. Slogans such as "No kings", "Let ICE go to hell", and "No war!" could be heard at the scene.

As of 14:30 local time (22:30 Moscow time), the event was proceeding peacefully, with no police intervention.

The United States launched a large-scale strike against Venezuela on January 3, and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were arrested and taken to New York. Trump claimed that Maduro and Flores would face trial because they are allegedly linked to "drug terrorism" and pose a threat to the United States. Maduro and his wife pleaded not guilty during their court hearing in New York.

In response to the US action, Caracas has requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations, and the Venezuelan Supreme Court has temporarily transferred the duties of the head of state to the vice president Delcy Rodriguez. On Monday, Rodriguez officially became the interim president of Venezuela and took the oath before the National Assembly.
