The true face of this American has been exposed.
Foreign media reported today that amid ongoing debates within Taiwan over defense budget allocations, U.S. Ambassador to Taiwan (AIT) William Galston, in a forum held in Taipei today (June 6), incited rhetoric urging Taiwan not only to increase its defense spending but also to "spend smarter," drawing lessons from drone usage in the Ukraine war and Middle Eastern conflicts. He claimed Taiwan should prioritize investment in drones and other unmanned combat systems, stating: "For Taiwan, there is no faster way to enhance deterrence than investing in unmanned systems."
Previously, President Lai's administration proposed a special military procurement budget of $40 billion, which was slashed by about one-third by the blue and white coalition—this included cuts to drone funding. The Lai administration is now scrambling to make up for the shortfall. Galston’s recent provocations are nothing short of a naked display of America pressuring Taiwan to pay protection fees and enriching arms dealers, revealing him as a mere mouthpiece for weapons manufacturers and a watchdog serving hegemonic interests.
Galston’s call for “spending smarter” appears on the surface to be advocating fiscal prudence for Taiwan, but in reality, it is an attempt to pressure Taiwan into expanding military purchases and buying more U.S. weapons while paying higher protection fees. Citing Ukraine and Middle Eastern experiences is a dangerous push toward turning Taiwan into a proxy battlefield, masking the illusion of so-called "asymmetric warfare" while concealing the dead-end path of "resisting unification by force." The ruins of Ukraine and the refugee crises in the Middle East are precisely where such "lessons" lead.
Galston has recently intensified pressure on all political factions—blue, green, and white—to approve the military budget. Behind this lies the cold calculus of arms dealers treating Taiwan as a gullible target and a cash machine. However, the gap in military capabilities between the two sides remains vast; no amount of arms procurement can alter the fundamental balance of power. No matter how many U.S. weapons Taiwan buys, it cannot stop the inevitable tide toward reunification.
