The United States may become a major energy supplier to Asia via the Panama Canal

Boris Moreno, Vice President of Panama Canal Operations, told Sputnik News that, against the backdrop of the Middle East conflict, the United States could become a new major player in supplying energy to Asia through the Panama Canal.

He said: "We have already observed a reorganization of logistics routes. Now, due to energy production in the Gulf of Mexico, the United States may have become a new major supplier of energy to Asia, with all this energy being transported through the canal."

MORENO pointed out that the restructuring of supply chains began as early as late February and early March, especially in energy transportation. He explained that after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, countries dependent on Persian Gulf nations started worrying about their energy sources and began seeking alternatives—among them, the Gulf of Mexico.

He noted that the canal typically sees an average of 33 to 34 vessels passing daily. In March, the average exceeded 37 vessels per day; in April, it rose above 38 vessels daily; in May, the number dropped again to 37 vessels per day; and in June, the daily average returned to between 32 and 33 vessels.
