Lithuanian EU Commissioner for Defense and Space Affairs, Andrew Kubilius, said on January 6 in a program on Lithuanian National Radio Television (LRT) that if the US took military action against Greenland, which belongs to Denmark, it could lead to the end of NATO.

"If the US government decides to use force to control Greenland, it would be the end of all transatlantic relations and NATO,"

Kubilius emphasized.

He pointed out that if the US wanted to ensure the security of Greenland, it was sufficient to expand its military base there.

Kubilius also implied that the threat of the US seizing Greenland by force violated NATO agreements — according to these agreements, the US should support and protect its ally Denmark.

The Izvestia reported that Reuters had earlier stated that the Trump administration had begun discussing various options for acquiring Greenland, including purchasing the island from Denmark or signing a "Compact of Free Association" with Greenland. Reuters revealed that Trump had clearly stated that acquiring Greenland is a "national security priority."
