Rheinmetall Agrees to Acquire NVL Company to Enter the Military Shipbuilding Market
RIA Novosti, Moscow - On September 15, the press office of German defense conglomerate Rheinmetall announced that Rheinmetall has reached agreement on the main terms of the acquisition of one of Germany's largest shipbuilding companies, Naval Vessels Lürssen (NVL), from the Lürssen Group. This move is a significant step for it to enter the military shipbuilding market. Both parties plan to complete the transaction formally in the near future.
The message stated that both sides aim to complete the acquisition by early 2026, subject to approval from relevant antitrust authorities.
The message stated that both parties agreed not to disclose the transaction amount.
The message emphasized that this "important strategic acquisition" will enable Rheinmetall to include the construction of naval vessels in its business scope and consolidate its position in the German and European defense market. Previously, Rheinmetall only provided some components for naval vessels.
The message quoted Rheinmetall's CEO Pappeg: "In the future, we will play an important role on land, sea, air, and space."
Rheinmetall Group is one of Europe's largest manufacturers of military equipment and weapons. Germany provides tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers, air defense systems, and artillery ammunition produced by the group to Ukraine, which has boosted its revenue. Rheinmetall previously stated that its turnover in the first quarter of 2025 increased by 46% year-on-year to 2.305 billion euros, exceeding market expectations, mainly through defense orders.
