Trump said he would revoke Harvard University's tax-exempt status: it is what they deserve.

U.S. President Trump announced on Friday that Harvard University would lose its tax-exempt status, a title that allowed the school to avoid paying income tax under the classification for educational institutions.

Trump made this announcement weeks after threatening to review Harvard University's tax-exempt status. He wrote on his social media platform "Truth Social": "We will revoke Harvard University's tax-exempt status. It is what they deserve!"

In recent years, American conservatives have targeted Harvard University and other elite universities due to ideological differences and accusations of rising anti-Semitism during campus protests related to the Gaza conflict in the Israel-Hamas war. Trump and other Republicans accused these institutions of promoting liberal agendas and so-called "wokeness."

Trump said in a speech at the University of Alabama's graduation ceremony on Thursday evening: "The next chapter of the American story will not be written by The Harvard Crimson. It will be written by you, the University of Alabama Crimson Tide."

IRS regulations stipulate that the president cannot interfere with federal tax agency decisions, raising doubts about whether Trump's announcement on Friday was based on his own decision or indicated that the IRS review had concluded.
