The Asian American population in the U.S. will double in 25 years! The Chinese American population is the largest.
South Korean media: The number of Asian Americans has doubled in 25 years, and the Chinese Americans are the most numerous!
On May 23, the South Korean media "Kyungjang News" published an article stating that while the Asian American population is growing rapidly, the total number of Asian Americans across the United States has reached a historical high of approximately 25 million.
The statistical data analysis report from the Pew Research Center's American Community Survey shows that the Asian American population in the United States was 24.8 million in 2023, accounting for 7.4% of the total U.S. population.
This is more than double the 11.9 million in 2000 (accounting for 4.2% of the total U.S. population at that time).
Among them, the Korean American population is 2 million, accounting for 8% of the Asian American population. The Chinese American population has the highest proportion (22%), with 5.5 million people, followed by Indian Americans (21%), Filipino Americans (19%), and Vietnamese Americans (9%). There are 1.6 million Japanese Americans, accounting for 7%, slightly less than the Korean Americans.
However, the proportion of foreign-born immigrants is showing a decreasing trend. The proportion of foreign-born immigrants among the Asian American population dropped from 63% in 2000 to 54% in 2023. The proportion of Korean-born Americans living in the United States decreased from 73% in 2000 to 56% in 2023.
By state, California has the largest Asian American population, with about 7.1 million. New York State and Texas rank second with approximately 2 million Asian Americans each. New Jersey (about 1 million) and Washington State (about 990,000) also have relatively large Asian American populations.
In addition, the median age of Asians is lower than the U.S. median age. In 2023, the median age of Asians was 34.7 years, which is 3.3 years younger than the U.S. median age of 38 years. However, the average age of foreign-born Asian immigrants is 46.1 years, much higher than the average age of U.S.-born Asian Americans at 19 years.
Depending on the place of birth, there are differences in English proficiency as well. Ninety-five percent of U.S.-born Asian Americans are proficient in English, while only 59% of foreign-born Asian immigrants are.
Moreover, 64% of U.S.-born Asian Americans use only English at home, compared to 14% of foreign-born Asian Americans. It was found that 6% of foreign-born Asian Americans use Korean at home, while only 2% of U.S.-born Asian Americans use Korean at home.
