Report: South Korea's Manufacturing GDP Highly Dependent on Overseas Market Demands from the US, China, and Other Countries
According to Yonhap News Agency, a report released by the Korea Federation of Business and Industry on the 21st showed that South Korean manufacturing GDP is highly dependent on overseas market demands such as China and the United States. According to the report, South Korea's manufacturing GDP in 2023 was 483.8 billion US dollars, of which 58.4% (282.4 billion US dollars) was driven by overseas demand. The dependence on overseas market demand has increased by 5.7 percentage points compared to 2000 (52.7%), while the dependence on domestic market demand decreased from 47.3% to 41.6%. Meanwhile, the overseas market demand dependence of the manufacturing GDP in China and the United States were 24.1% and 29.9%, respectively, while Japan's was 40.6%, with the global average at 42.4%.
By country, South Korea's manufacturing GDP dependence on the United States was 13.7%, on China was 10.8%, on Japan was 2.6%, and on India was 1.9%. Compared to 2000, the dependence on the United States has decreased by 1.1 percentage points, while the dependence on China has more than doubled.
The Federation of Business and Industry pointed out that with the continuous intensification of Sino-US trade friction, if the economies of both countries cool down, South Korean manufacturing production may face more severe negative impacts than other competing countries. The government urgently needs to take active measures to enhance the competitiveness of the local manufacturing industry.
