The major achievement of the UK Prime Minister's visit to China: Beijing will reduce the import tariff on whisky from 10% to 5%

One of the achievements of UK Prime Minister Starmer's visit to China is that the State Council Tariff Commission announced on January 30 that, starting from February 2, China will implement a provisional import tariff of 5% on whisky.

The State Council Tariff Commission released the "Announcement of the State Council Tariff Commission on Adjusting the Import Tariff for Whisky." The announcement stated that starting from February 2, 2026, China will implement a provisional import tariff of 5% on whisky.

At the end of 2024, the State Council Tariff Commission announced the 2025 tariff adjustment plan. Whisky and brandy were removed from the "Provisional Import Tariff List," and the applicable tax rate was raised from the original 5% to 10%. For the previous seven years, the applicable tax rate for imported whisky was 5%.

About 85% of the whisky imported by China comes from the UK, making British whisky merchants the biggest beneficiaries.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that China and the UK jointly signed four economic and trade achievement documents, which will further deepen Sino-British economic and trade relations in terms of goods trade, service trade, and economic and trade mechanism building.
