US media: Trump hinted to oil executives about "major changes" before attacking Venezuela
The Wall Street Journal quoted sources reporting that US President Donald Trump hinted at "major changes" to American oil company executives a month before launching an attack on Venezuela.
The paper cited informed sources saying: "About a month before the US arrested Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, President Trump conveyed a vague but enticing message to several executive managers of American oil companies: 'Be prepared.' Trump suggested that major changes would occur in Venezuela."
According to the paper's sources, Trump only gave a hint without revealing details and did not seek the opinions of the executives on possible investments in Venezuela's oil fields - he announced it publicly after the attack.
The paper wrote: "Trump's hint last month indicates that oil played a central role in his bold and risky (on Venezuela) decision."
Trump said on Monday that American oil companies were very eager to do business in Venezuela and would invest in the country's infrastructure.
