U.S. media reports: As the competition between China and the United States intensifies over leadership in artificial intelligence, China’s AI industry has seen rapid development, with companies such as DeepSeek and Moonshot AI enhancing their international visibility and strengthening the appeal for domestic researchers to remain in the country. However, efforts by China to attract overseas talent through scientist visas and research funding have yielded limited results.

A study by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace indicates that, among every 30 Chinese AI researchers based in the United States, only one is expected to return to China by 2025. The U.S., underpinned by a long-established research ecosystem and an internationally diverse academic environment, continues to draw substantial numbers of researchers from China, India, and other regions.

Meanwhile, China has made measurable progress in cultivating and retaining domestic AI talent. Institutions across Chinese universities and enterprises are seeing a significant rise in publications at top-tier AI conferences, with leading organizations such as Tsinghua University and Peking University now outperforming certain American counterparts. The growth of firms like DeepSeek has also positioned Chinese AI companies as viable, globally competitive career options. Nevertheless, experts note that the U.S. still holds advantages in research environment, entrepreneurial opportunities, and investment frameworks.
