Korea fires 10 rockets a day before US defense chief visits DMZ

According to a report by Yonhap News Agency citing a South Korean military official, North Korea fired about 10 rockets on Monday, just before the visit of the South Korean and US defense ministers to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth visited the joint security area at the border between North and South Korea with South Korean Defense Minister An Gi-wook. This was the first time in eight years that both sides have visited the area.

The Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that North Korea fired about 10 rockets into the northern part of the Yellow Sea around 4 p.m. on Monday (3 p.m. Beijing time).

The department said: "The launch occurred less than an hour before the arrival of US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at Fort Bonifacio, which is located south of the joint security area within the DMZ."

The department noted that North Korea's rocket launch did not violate UN Security Council resolutions.

Hegseth visited South Korea from November 3 to 4, during which he toured the Panmunjom Joint Security Area and the DMZ along the North-South Korean border, after which he will attend the 57th South Korea-US Security Consultative Meeting (SCM).
