American political struggles are becoming increasingly intense, which has also caused political polarization to become more severe and irreparable.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed to CBS News that it searched the home of former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton in Bethesda, Maryland, early Friday morning.
"The FBI is conducting court-authorized activities in this area," the FBI said in a statement. "There is no threat to public safety. We have no further comments."
Sources familiar with the search told CBS News that this part is related to an investigation into classified documents.
Federal Bureau of Investigation agents were also seen leaving a building in downtown Washington, D.C., where John Bolton's political action committee is located.
Bolton tried multiple times to contact him but did not respond. The New York Post was the first to report that Bolton's home was being searched by the FBI.
Bolton served as National Security Advisor during President Trump's first term, but he resigned after 17 months in office—or was asked to resign by Trump.
During Trump's first term, Bolton wrote a book about his tenure as National Security Advisor titled "The Room Where It Happened," which portrayed Trump in an unflattering manner. The first Trump administration tried to prevent the publication of the book and later sued him to obtain profits. The Department of Justice launched a criminal investigation into whether Bolton had released classified information, claiming he had not completed the pre-publication review.
In November 2020, Trump claimed that Bolton had "illegally released a large amount of classified information" in his book. In another social media post, he called Bolton a "lowlife who should be jailed, have money seized, spread, and profit from highly classified information."
The Biden administration later ended the investigation against Bolton and dropped the lawsuit against him.
He had "unpleasant" incidents with Trump.
