【Text by Observers Network, Pan Yuchen; Editor by Gao Xin】According to Reuters, Mexican President Sheinbaum said on September 12 that Mexican officials will hold talks with Chinese representatives next week regarding Mexico's plan to impose additional tariffs on goods from China, and emphasized that the tariff increase is not a "coercive measure".

"We have a very good relationship with China, and we hope to continue maintaining a good relationship with them," Sheinbaum said at her daily press conference. She added that the new tariff measures target industries that need to enhance domestic production.

Sheinbaum added that the proposed tariff measures would affect hundreds of products from countries that have not reached trade agreements with Mexico, and it does not specifically target any country.

She also stated that Mexican officials have also contacted South Korea to initiate negotiations.

Previously on September 9, Sheinbaum submitted a legislative proposal to the lower house of Congress aiming to amend the General Import and Export Tax Law, so as to impose tariffs of up to 50% on various imported goods from countries that have not reached a free trade agreement with Mexico.

Mexican Economy Minister Ebrard further stated on September 10 that Mexico will raise the tariffs on cars made in China and other countries that have not reached a free trade agreement with Mexico (such as South Korea and India) to the maximum level allowed by the World Trade Organization (i.e., 50%). Currently, Mexico imposes a 20% tariff on cars and other products from these countries.

Previously on September 11, the Mexican-China Chamber of Commerce called on the Mexican government to reconsider these measures, stating that they threaten the competitiveness of goods sold in Mexico and the application of electric vehicles in the country.

Mexico is a major car manufacturer, mainly exporting to the United States, but also importing hundreds of thousands of cars each year.
