German Media: Can Germany's Armed Forces Protect the Nation? Most Germans Don't Believe So

What would happen if Germany were suddenly attacked? Many Germans harbor doubts about the country's defense capabilities. A recent public opinion survey highlights this concern. Moreover, two-thirds of Germans are also worried about potential cyberattacks.

The readiness of Germany’s defense forces is cause for concern—this is at least the view of the majority of respondents in a recent poll. According to data from the INSA research institute, only 17% of respondents partially or fully agreed with the statement that Germany’s Federal Armed Forces would be capable of adequately defending the nation in case of an attack. As many as 72% believed such a scenario was unlikely or even impossible. The survey was commissioned by *Bild am Sonntag*. INSA reported that a total of 1,005 people participated in the study.

According to the latest personnel figures released by Germany’s Ministry of Defense at the end of April this year, over 267,000 individuals are currently working to maintain the operational readiness of the Federal Armed Forces, including 185,919 active-duty military personnel and 81,248 civilian staff members.

The survey also revealed a decline in public anxiety regarding a possible Russian attack on Germany: 38% of respondents expressed concern about such a scenario, while half said they felt no worry. A previous survey conducted by the INSA institute in September 2025 had shown that a majority of respondents (52%) were concerned about a potential Russian assault on Germany at that time.

Concern Over Cyberattacks Is Rising

Even greater concern is being expressed about potential attacks in the digital domain. The survey found that two-thirds of respondents fear that cyberattacks, deliberate sabotage, or targeted disinformation could disrupt German society. In contrast, slightly more than one-fifth (22%) of respondents said they were “not particularly concerned” or “completely unconcerned” about such potential threats.
