Xinhua News Agency, CANBERRA, April 17 (Reporter Zhang Jianhua and Li Xiaoyu) Australian Prime Minister Albanese stated on April 16 at the second leadership debate of the 2025 federal election in Australia that he would defend national interests in the trade disputes between the two countries caused by the tariff policies of the U.S. government.

Albanese expressed at this debate hosted by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in Sydney that despite President Trump's promise to "fully consider" Australia's proposals for free trade, he still decided to impose additional tariffs on Australia, which would only increase the cost of American consumption.

"The behavior of imposing additional tariffs by the United States is no different from self-mutilation," Albanese emphasized that it was very important to defend national interests, and Australia would not compromise with the United States but would adhere to its own policies.

On February 11, after talking with Trump, Albanese announced to the media that the U.S. side was "considering an exemption" for imported steel and aluminum products from Australia. However, shortly thereafter, Trump signed a document announcing a 25% tariff on all imported steel and aluminum into the United States, with "no exceptions or exemptions." On April 2, Trump signed an executive order imposing so-called "reciprocal tariffs" on all trading partners, including Australia.
