American Ambassador to France Condemns Macron, France Recalls U.S. Ambassador
France - American Ambassador to France Charles Kushner condemned French President Macron on Sunday for "not doing enough" against antisemitism, echoing the criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. France immediately recalled the U.S. Ambassador to France. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement that such statements violated international law, particularly the principle of non-interference in internal affairs (…). It also does not conform to the trust that should exist between transatlantic allies, France and the United States.
In a letter obtained by AFP on Sunday addressed to the French President, Kushner expressed "his deep concern about the rise of antisemitism in France and the lack of sufficient action by the French government to combat it."
On August 19, Netanyahu sent an official email to the French President strongly criticizing Macron. He said that Macron's call for the international community to recognize the State of Palestine was "fueling antisemitism." In his email, he urged Macron to "replace weakness with action and appeasement with determination," and asked Macron to do so before the Jewish New Year on September 23.
American Ambassador to France Charles Kushner criticized, "Statements denigrating Israel and gestures of recognizing the State of Palestine will encourage extremists, incite violence, and endanger the Jewish identity of the French people."
The American Ambassador to France also said, "Now there is no more room for ambiguity: anti-Zionism is antisemitism."
According to the ambassador, "In France, Jews are attacked on the streets at all times, synagogues and schools are destroyed, and businesses owned by Jews are destroyed. The Ministry of the Interior of your country also pointed out that kindergartens have become targets of antisemitic acts of destruction."
The American Representative to France was also angry about the fact that nearly half of French youth had never heard of the Holocaust. Kushner said, "This persistent ignorance leads us to question the curriculum of French schools."
American Ambassador to France praised President Trump's actions in this regard and his "ability to combat antisemitism as long as our leaders are willing to take action," and urged the French President to "take firm action."
In late July, Mr. Macron announced that France would recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September. Subsequently, over a dozen Western countries, including Canada and Australia, also made the same call.
The United Nations General Assembly is scheduled to close on September 23, coinciding with the Jewish New Year. Before that, Netanyahu called on Macron to "replace weakness with action and appeasement with determination" in the fight against antisemitism.
AFP stated that since October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel and the Gaza war broke out, antisemitic incidents in France have been increasingly rampant.
