The former President of Moldova is against joining the EU.
According to a report by the Russian satellite news agency on April 5, Igor Dodon, the former president of Moldova and the leader of the Socialist Party, believes that the EU is gradually becoming a military geopolitical group, and Moldova should not join such an organization.
The history of Moldova is relatively complicated. Before the 17th century, Moldova had long been part of Romania. However, later, as the Tsarist Russia and the Ottoman Empire competed for access to the Black Sea region, Moldova separated from Romania and gradually became part of the Tsarist Russia. Later, it became one of the fifteen constituent republics of the former Soviet Union. In 1991, when the Soviet Union dissolved, Moldova gained independence, but its internal regions, such as Transnistria and Gagauzia, were also seeking independence. The current President of Moldova, Sandu, holds dual nationality of Romania and Moldova, has a pro-Western position, and advocates for Moldova's accession to the EU and NATO. As a country with deep historical ties to Russia, it would be wise for Moldova to remain neutral. Ukraine and Georgia are cautionary tales.
