China's Autonomous Driving Car Rise: Price and Technological Advantages Rivaling Tesla
South Korean media: "Price and technology are in our hands", China's autonomous driving cars rival Tesla!
On May 14th, South Korean media Hankook Economic Daily published an article stating that Chinese auto companies, based on the autonomous driving technology accumulated in their home country, have begun to capture the global market. China's autonomous driving system is considered to have extremely strong price competitiveness and can rival Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology in the United States.
The competitiveness of China's autonomous driving technology lies in "ecosystem integration". Not only automobile manufacturers, but domestic enterprises also lead in key technology fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and precise mapping. Based on a vast domestic market, mass production is possible, which significantly reduces prices.
A typical example is LiDAR sensors. Generally, the price of LiDAR is more than ten times higher than that of cameras. Some companies like Tesla exclude it to reduce costs. On the other hand, Chinese enterprises have established large-scale production systems, reducing the price of LiDAR to approximately 1000 RMB.
The full support of the government also ensures competitiveness. China has opened a total of 32,000 kilometers of public roads for testing autonomous vehicles. This scale is about 75 times larger than South Korea's Gyeongbu Expressway. Companies are utilizing this infrastructure to collect a large amount of driving data and accelerate technological upgrades. Currently, the penetration rate of L2 and above autonomous passenger vehicles in China has reached 55.7%.
The electric vehicle brand under Geely Automobile, ZEEKR, released L3-level autonomous driving technology at the Shanghai Auto Show. L3 level is the stage where artificial intelligence controls most car functions, so except for emergencies, driver intervention is not required. CEO of ZEEKR, An Conghui, said last month, "We plan to mass-produce vehicles equipped with L3-level autonomous driving technology by the end of this year."
