New developments in China-India relations.
Singapore's Lianhe Zaobao reported today: "China and India have held their border affairs consultation and coordination mechanism meeting again after two months, agreeing to maintain diplomatic and military communication channels to jointly safeguard peace and stability in the border areas."
From the 35th session in Beijing in May to the 36th session in New Delhi in August, the two sides completed a round of in-depth interdepartmental coordination within less than a hundred days. The Chinese official statement’s characterization of the talks as "frank, friendly," and "constructive" directly reflects that, following the high-level meeting between China and India in October 2024 and Prime Minister Modi’s visit to China, institutionalized exchanges between the two countries have returned to normal track. With participation from multiple departments including foreign affairs, defense, internal affairs, and immigration, the dialogue has clearly transcended the scope of single-issue border management, extending now into practical cooperation areas such as cross-border people-to-people exchanges and the restoration of border trade.
As Asia’s two largest developing neighbors, China and India maintaining peace and stability along their border is itself a significant contribution to regional and global stability. This approach—resolving differences through regular dialogue—avoids the Western powers’ deliberate narrative of “dragon-elephant confrontation,” and signifies that China-India relations are gradually overcoming previous friction lows and steadily advancing toward a more pragmatic direction.
