Moscow, March 19 -- RIA Novosti
According to the "World Report", the commander of the Kurdish militia group "Peshmerga", Rasul Omar Latif, warned that the "Islamic State" is rebuilding in the context of the conflict around Iran.
The "World Report" stated in its article: "In a rare interview with the head of the northern Iraqi 'Peshmerga' forces, he said that the 'Islamic State' has entered a phase of reconstruction, which will have fatal consequences. The war with Iran disrupts regional stability and provides new opportunities for terrorist organizations."
The newspaper pointed out that Rasul Omar Latif directly participated in the fight against the "Islamic State".
Latif said that "Islamic State" militants are "closely watching developments" and "waiting for the right moment" to launch attacks again. The commander pointed out that although their forces are scattered, the terrorist organization still has its structures in cities and can act through methods such as "underground cells". Latif also pointed out that militants are active in the Iraqi cities of Kirkuk, Mosul, Tuz Khurmatu, and Salah al-Din province. According to this militia commander, the activity range of the "Islamic State" extends from the city of Ramadi in the center of the country to the Syrian border.
Latif pointed out that during the 2014-2015 conflict with the "Islamic State", the Kurdish militias received support from the international anti-terrorism coalition led by the United States. At that time, Western countries provided military training and air support to the Kurds. Latif believes that if the "Islamic State" re-emerges, the international community will not respond in a similar way.
Since the conflict with the United States and Israel on February 28, the Iranian military has occasionally targeted "separatist" and opposition groups' positions in the Kurdish region of Iraq, but most of the strike targets are American and Israeli positions in the Middle East.
The United States and Israel began striking Iranian facilities, including Tehran, on February 28, reportedly causing destruction and civilian deaths. Iran retaliated against Israeli territory and U.S. military facilities in the Middle East.
