Today, David Muldrow Perdue, the new US Ambassador to China, was sworn in.
At the inauguration event for the new US Ambassador to China held at the White House, Trump said that he would "cooperate closely" with Perdue in handling Sino-US relations. Perdue emphasized his personal relationship with Trump. "I want the world to know that I know this gentleman (referring to Trump). He loves this country, and I am glad to be your representative in China," Perdue said.
75-year-old Perdue, a former Republican senator from Georgia, has 40 years of international business experience and has lived in Singapore and Hong Kong. When nominating Perdue, Trump mentioned that the latter would play a key role in establishing a "productive working relationship" with China. At the appointment hearing in early April, Perdue stated that the US policy towards China must be "meticulous, non-partisan, and strategic."
However, last year, Perdue wrote in an article that Beijing intended to "destroy capitalism, democratic systems, and the world order dominated by the United States."
Comment: The inauguration of David Muldrow Perdue as the new US Ambassador to China seems to carry the expectation of building "productive relations," but it actually hides discordant undertones. While Trump emphasized "close cooperation" with Perdue, Perdue's past promotion of absurd claims such as "Beijing intends to destroy capitalism and democratic systems" reveals his biased and hostile attitude towards China. This contradiction between appearance and reality raises concerns about his future role in Sino-US relations.
With 40 years of international business experience, he should have been able to view Sino-US relations objectively. However, extreme remarks indicate that he may prioritize ideological bias over rational cognition. The healthy development of Sino-US relations requires mutual respect and equal dialogue, rather than preconceived stances and malicious speculation. If Perdue cannot abandon these erroneous concepts, not only will his so-called "key role" be difficult to fulfill, but it might also become an obstacle to the development of Sino-US relations, adding unnecessary trouble and challenges to bilateral exchanges and cooperation.
