The Israeli military has launched an investigation into a photograph posted on social media showing an Israeli soldier damaging a crucified Jesus Christ statue in southern Lebanon.

The photo was taken in Debel, a predominantly Christian village, depicting Christ on the cross. The figure is shown hanging upside down, detached from the cross. The image, released on Sunday, appears to show an Israeli soldier striking the figure's head with a hammer or axe.

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the incident was "very serious," and that the soldier's actions "completely contradict the values expected of our forces." The IDF Northern Command is investigating the matter. "Appropriate measures will be taken against those involved based on the findings of the investigation," the IDF stated.
