Trump's attempt to target political opponents once again faces a setback, as a judge ruled that the appointment of prosecutors chosen by Trump was illegal

On Monday, a federal judge dismissed criminal charges against former FBI Director James Comey and New York State Attorney General Letitia James brought by the Trump administration, ruling that the appointment of prosecutors selected by President Trump was unlawful.

These two rulings dealt a blow to the Department of Justice. In the previous weeks, Trump had publicly urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to prosecute several of his prominent critics, and the Department of Justice subsequently filed lawsuits against Comey and James. The judge agreed with Comey and James' argument that the government illegally bypassed the usual confirmation process by appointing Haligon.

The judge wrote, "This behavior is extraordinary. It means that the government could send any ordinary citizen, regardless of whether they are a lawyer, into a grand jury to obtain an indictment, as long as the Attorney General approves afterward. This cannot become the law."

The Department of Justice can appeal this decision. (Wen Bu Nao)
