WHO: Over 1,300 Dead in Europe Due to Heatwave in One Week
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that more than 1,300 deaths have already been caused by extreme heat across Europe in the past week.
Tedros stated: "Since June 21, over 1,300 heat-related deaths have been recorded in Europe. Heat stress is often referred to as the 'silent killer,' and homes, workplaces, and schools across Europe are not designed for such temperatures."
He pointed out that Europe is the continent warming the fastest in the world, with temperature increases twice the global average.
He also said: "Currently, 150 million people are suffering from extreme heat. Hundreds have died, schools have closed, and power systems have reached their limits."
Tedros noted that under the impacts of climate change and global warming, extreme heat—which was once considered a phenomenon seen only once in a generation—is now becoming a regular occurrence almost every year.
